∙ 14y agoNo, not exactly. Effexor is a brand name for the drug venlafaxine. Venlafaxine is a serotonin-nonrepinephrine reuptake inhibitor used for the treatment of depression and anxiety disorders. While Effexor works on serotonin receptors, it also works on nonrepinephrine receptors blocking the uptake to increase the amount of both chemicals in the brain.
