Valens spent most of his time dealing with a rebellion by Procopius, a cousin of the previous emperor, a war against the Goths, a war against the Persians, and a second war against the Goths. The second war against the Goths occurred after he granted their request to settle in the territory of the empire, in Moesia, south of the river Danube. They wanted to settle there to escape from the expansion into Eastern Europe of the Huns. The Goths rebelled because the Romans did not give them the food and the land they had promised them due to a famine. They ravaged large areas. Valens headed an army against them and was routed and killed in the battle of Adrianople (378) one of the worst Roman defeats in history.
Valens had poor military skills, was suspicious of plots and was harsh on those he suspected of treason. However, he was a good administrator and was sensitive to the plight of the poor. In religion, he belonged to the Arian sect of Christianity, which was popular around the empire. After his death Arian Christianity was banned and persecuted.
