Some use rockets, some use light sails (well, they do in SF books, I can't think of a movie offhand), some use various forms of faster-than-light (FTL) engines. That last would include the "warp drive" of Star Trek and the "hyperdrive" of Forbidden Planet.
THERE IS NO REAL ANSWER!!! Sorry, but it is all fiction. The people that created "Avatar" never thought about it. So, there IS NO REAL ANSWER.
<3ed "AVATAR"
Science Fiction movies often feature fictional spacecraft with advanced propulsion systems, such as warp drives, hyperdrives, or ion propulsion. These engines are imaginary technologies created by writers and filmmakers to enable faster-than-light travel or interstellar journeys in their fictional worlds.

Some facts with alot of fiction. The special effects are good. The aircraft & ships for the most part are realistic. The action scenes are great. The movie Tora, Tora, Tora has more facts, less fiction. However the aircraft, ships & special effects are less realistic.I like both movies, although both movies have some historical inaccuracies.

the motors/engines
Most ships now use diesel engines. Some naval ships have nuclear reactors
Fuel for ships and engines.
In the olden days ships used masts , today they use engines.
The ships have their own electrical generation capabilities, usually combined with their diesel-electric engines.
Yes, biofuel, like biodiesel, will run in diesel engines. Many ships have diesel engines run on fossil fuel diesel and they will easily run on biofuel.

You can't. The force of a black hole is so powerful that not even the best or fastest engines that man can possibly build would be able to escape. Ignore all these space ships in sci-fi movies you see escaping from black holes at the last minute - that's all fiction. In reality, if you come across a black hole - for lack of better words - you're screwed.
