An environmental dilemma is a situation in which every solution has a negative outcome. An example would be the use of Nuclear Energy - If we discontinue its use, we would suffer continued atmospheric pollution from usage of fossil fuels. However if we continue to use nuclear energy, we have thousands of years with unrealized hazards from storing the waste byproducts from the creation of the energy. Neither solution having a positive result, this would be recognized as a dilemma.
Note: Issues like the gulf oil spill, carbon pollution, and global warming, do not usually classify as dilemmas due to the fact that there is a method of POSITIVE resolution to the problem, even if it is not financially applicable. A dilemma must have no potential positive outcomes.
The three types are Population growth, Pollution, and change in climate.
