under the distributor cap
The cam shaft position sensor is located under the distributor cap. You can replace this easily by undoing the screws holding on the distributor cap, remove and replace the sensor, then just replace the distributor cap.
It is inside of the distributor under the cap and rotor. It is the only electronic item in the distributor.
replace the cap, it most likely has a hairline crack or bad seal.
Unscrew the screws holding the cap and lift it up and away from the distributor. Pull the rotor straight up and install the new one.
If you remove the distributor cap and rotor then you will see the cam sensor bolted on the distributor and it will have an electrical connector pluged into it.
It is right behind the Throttle body and just to the right of the distributor. The wire that is in the center of the distributor cap hooks to the ignition coil.
If it is a newer vehicle it most likely has coil packs not a distributor. Follow your plug wires and see where they go, if they go into black boxes they are coil packs.
It is the only electrical part that's in the distributor. Remove the cap and rotor and you will see it.
Climb up and lean over the top of the engine and look at the rear of the engine and you will see 9 rubber spark plug wires that are pluged into the distributor cap.
