You should have either a bubble wand, or an air stone in a fish tank as this adds more oxygen to the water; this should not be confused with adding a filter to a tank, as that is a separate, but also a needed piece of equipment.

∙ 14y agoAn aerator will do virtually nothing for your tank or your fish. If you want it to do something other than make bubbles you will attach it to a filter. Then, once the filter has cycled and the bacteria are working it will be of benefit to your water quality. The basic rules for keeping fish successfully are :- 1 inch of fish needs a minimumof 1 gallon of water. :- Every tank needs a permanently running cycled filter. Every tank need 50% of its water replaced every week. Follow the above rules and your fish may do well. Fail to follow the rules and I can guarantee you will have constant problems with your fish.

∙ 13y agoActually, all aquarium fish can live without an air pump, as long as there is a filter that moves the water around.
If you do not have a filter, then it is best to stick with Betta's (fighting fish), or other labrynth fish such as the paradise gourami.
