There are some very nice force diagrams in the link below, but one thing they fail to mention is that the force on the axel is equal and opposite to the SUM of the forces on the ropes, which are not necessarily pulling straight away from the spot where the axel is attached. If you are doing a lab experiment, you should draw an accurate diagram of the setup you are measuring, including the angle of the ropes.
