The user manual recommends only premium fuel for the C240. I happen to have the 2002 C240. Though a bit expensive to fill-up, but the quality of drive is amazing. I have this car also and I've found that if you don't use premium gas your gas hand will not read, and it goes to zero(it malfunctions) its weird.
The fuel filter on a 2002 Mercedes C240 is located on the driver's side just inside the wheel well. Not in the wheel well, but just beyond it. If you have the car on a lift, you can't miss it. It's fairly large in diameter and there are 3 hoses going to it. You will have to replace the clamps on it because they are the type you have to break in order to change it.
It is mounted on the upper front of the engine. It is a canister type.
