The terms middle ages and feudalism describe two different phenomena depending on the writer. Feudalism refers to the type of government that existed. Each man reported to his overlord and owed service and taxes to him. The middle ages referred to the type of culture that existed before the renaissance. While the two covered much of the same time period, they did not cover exactly the same time.

Feudalism is a system in which a weak central government uses a hierarchy of power is used instead of developing a strong central power. England of the period before the Norman conquest had a strong enough central government not to need feudalism, so the system was a bit different. When the Normans invaded, the challenges to central authority were severe, and the Normans came from feudal France, where they were accustomed to feudalism. Se England became feudal for a while.
