After Caesar's death there were more civil wars. An alliance between three supporters of Caesar, Marc Antony, Octavian and Lepidus (the Second Triumvirate) defeated the forces of the assassins of Caesar. The final civil war of the Roman Republic was between Octavian and Marc Antony and his ally, Cleopatra VII of Egypt. This was a fight over who would become the sole ruler of Rome and her territories. Octavian won and established his absolute rule. He was the first Roman emperor and established the period of rule by emperors.
