Answer.40 cal. Glock semi-auto pistol. Some still carry .38 or .357 Smith&Wesson

revolvers.

They use AK47's or AK74's.

they don't carry AK47. you obviously know nothing about this topic if you think that they carry AK47's. officers who walk a beat only carry a handgun. and the star force use M4 carbines and mp5s. never in the history of the Australian police force has anyone carried an AK47!!

uuhhh your both wrong the guy at the top was right until the he said the use ak47s and the Mp5 is only used by certain german police departments and only for special encounters and the guy at the top knows more about this than you.

He only means the australian police force not the german

It varies by department, and there is no universal standard across all 50 states.. not even in the federal departments, although there has been more emphasis on standardization as of late. Civilian police who guard military posts and bases carry the Beretta M9. The Sig-Sauer P228 DAK is in use with several federal agencies. State, county, and local police departments have their own jurisdiction to select what they standardise on. The North Carolina Highway Patrol recently replaced their Beretta 96 pistols with the Smith & Wesson M&P .357. The Johnston County Sherriff's Office issues the Glock 21 .45. Other departments will vary in their choices of firearms. I've seen Glock, Springfield/HS Produckt, Sig-Sauer, Beretta, Smith & Wesson, and several other makes in use with police departments in the US.

Each Police Department makes their own decision on the current model that officers will carry as standard issue. It varies from department to department. More often than not in 9mm or .40 S&W. Glocks are extremely popular, as are the full sized Beretta pistols. Although not necessarily the best, they are reliable and relatively cheap and safe (double action w/ numerous safeties, to keep the lawyers happy).

No, police only carry guns in certain jobs (including patrol, most police do carry, but some don't if its not operationally required) and only while they are formally on duty.

How can we keep gun ownership in this country legal to preserve the second amendment, while still keeping safety in mind?

I am not a US citizen. However, I would suggest that the serial number and type of gun are registered with the police, and a licence issued by the police. It then the owner of the gun commits a criminal offience, then that licence is removed from him/her, and the weapon surrendered to the police, until the penalty for the criminal offence has been terminalted.
