No, Marco Polo was emphatically NOT an explorer. The vatican had asked Kublai Khan what it would take to keep the Mongol Hordes out of Europe. His response was that to keep from being conquered, the Mongols would accept tribute. Marco Polo simply was enroute to pay the Mongolian Empire tribute. Marco's first trip was an overland route, via the ancient silk highway. (he, Marco, made as many as four trips to the orient). The Chinese/Mongollians scoffed at Marco and company, whom thought the world was flat. Khublai sailed Marco and company, back to Europe via a fleet of Junks. upon Marco's fourth and final journey to the Mongol empire, when they sailed him back to Europe, the Europeans merely kept the fleet and a few things else that were either stolen or given to Marco and his men. The following items were also kept/stolen/given to Marco: cannon, weapons-such as muskets that could be lit by a fuse, gun powder and the formulae to make it, the magnetic compass, movable print type, paper and a few other items. Eurpeans conquered All the known world with the instruments that were taken, one way or another, from the Orient.
