Classifications of licenses vary by jurisdiction. Since you used "license" and not "licence", it would reasonable to assume that you're in the US, and that's where it gets complicated.

In the US, classes vary by state, but, for the most part, a "standard" license will allow you to drive a vehicle up to a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating of 26,000 lbs.

But, generally speaking, US licenses can be categorized as such:

  • Restricted licenses: These would be learner's permits, graduated licenses for students still in school, etc.
  • Personal use licenses: This is your run-of-the-mill license which allows you to operate a single vehicle up to 26,000 lbs. Gross Vehicle Weight Rating. The actual class can vary by state.. some states use Class C, others have gone to Class D to separate it from the Class C CDL. Additionally, some states have non-CDL Class A and B licenses, for vehicles which meet the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating requirements for a CDL, but are exempt from requiring one (registered farm vehicles under certain conditions, recreational vehicles not operated on a for-hire basis, emergency services and first response vehicles, etc.)
  • Commercial Drivers License (CDL): Classes A, B, and C. These are federally regulated, and do not vary between states.
  • Additionally, some states will have a chauffeur's license. A passenger vehicle doesn't require a CDL and passenger endorsement unless it is designed to transport more than 15 persons (including the driver). In some states, a chauffeur's license is required to transport people on a for-hire basis when a CDL is not required (e.g., taxi drivers, limo drivers, etc.)
