Well I think it would depend on the college but if you were attending a fashion college, the major would be fashion design but a four-year or a community college might have it under a different name. The school has years and years of experience in the fashion industry and many famous fashion designers graduated from FIDM.

The requirements are different depending on which major you want to pursue but in general, they require to see your transcrips if you're transfering from high school or junior college. They don't require any prior fashion experience or any prior work experience but my advice is to give 110% on the entrance project, essay and interview and intern while you're in school because that's the best. Good luck!

Well I would think it would be difficult for someone to try to get into the fashion designing without any formal training. There are schools out there such as FIDM/The Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising who specialize in careers in the fashion industry and even offer Fashion Design as a major. Many famous fashion designers started out at FIDM and really benefited from their education there and made awesome connections within the fashion industry that led to jobs! If you have talent, drive and are passionate about fashion, then it sounds like you have what it takes to be a fashion designer.
Lauren's major was merchandise product development at FIDM and it's a great major because there's a wide variety of careers you can choose and from what I hear, the program is a lot of fun! There's such careers as being a trend analyst, a brand manager or even a merchandiser. FIDM's website has a lot more info too.
