The monitor.
Tower style computers have a monitor that is separate to the monitor. The tower would sit under a desk, by a desk or on top of the desk with the monitor attached by a cable but still being a separate entity to the hard drive.
You can buy a desk that allows for an attachment for a monitor mount. Usually the mount attachments are sold separately.

Monitor stands are not necessary for computers. You can easily just set the monitor on the desk. For people who like the screen up high, a monitor stand would be necessary.
The best computer monitor for a small amount of space is a flat screen monitor. Flat screens are slim and will take up minimal space on your desk. They also have a better picture than older monitors.
It should be layed out so that when you sit in front of the desk the monitor should be elivated so top of the monitor's screen should be just above your eyebrows so your eyes get maximum view of the screen and on the the desk the keyboard should be on the desk in front of you placed at the length of where your arm are slightly bent and the monitor about 5cms behind the keyboard.

The main benefit, in my experience, is the ability to access other areas of your workspace easily. With an ordinary desk, you would have to get up from your chair to get a print out or file, or supplies, etc whereas with a u-shaped desk you could merely turn your body to accomplish these things. The u shaped desk over the ordinary desk is going to be for the computer monitor. They make them that way so your monitor is close enough without you straining your eyes and still be able to see your desk.
A computer monitor wall mount clears up space on the desk. Your computer monitor hangs on the wall, which adds a little more space on your desk, which can be more convenient for people with small computer desks.
If the desk allows for such an attachment, there is no reason you couldn't. The wood must be strong enough though, or you risk damaging the desk under the weight. In such cases, consider purchasing a hutch instead.
