It's got to be a synthetic diesel engine oil. The easiest oil to get in the US is Shell Rotella T6, viscosity 5W40.
I would recommend Halfords Gear Oil EP 80W-90 Hypoid Light or something similar in quality.

Shell Rotella T 10W30. This oil is made for diesel engines, which run hot, which is why it's great for the hot-running VW Beetle engine. And it's inexpensive enough you can change it every 1500 miles like you're supposed to--no oil filter in these cars, so you need to change oil very frequently for the best engine life--without it costing you an arm and a leg.
