After hearing his/her confession, before pronouncing sacramental absolution, it is customary for the priest to ask the penitent to say some prayers (e.g., "Say three Our Fathers and three Hail Marys, and now make a good Act of Contrition for your sins.") do a good work, read part of The Bible, thoughtfully pray a particularly apt Psalm, or the like. I have encountered all of these at one time or another when making my own confessions over the years. Sometimes the priest can get inventive in assigning penances, in an effort to "make the punishment fit the crime," though a penance is not really a punishment as such. Sometimes the priest might want to make you reflect on something you said, so he would assign a penance somehow related to one's sins. Penances are an ancient custom, and they are supposed to be a reminder that while God's forgiveness is free for the asking, sometimes the mischief or consequences due to a sin endure long past the forgiveness, and really, one ought to try to make amends, minimize or perhaps undo the damage or injury to others caused by our sin.

What happens during the Sacrament of Reconciliation in the Catholic Church?

The penitent goes to the priest, names his sins, all the circumstance which could affect culpability (increasing or lessening it) and the number of times each of them happened. After this the priest gives advice on how to avoid falling into this sin or how to continue living in God's grace, assigns penance and absolves the sins with the authority of Jesus Christ. After this the penitent leaves, fortified by the graces of this sacrament and can perform the penance any time between then and his next confession.

What is the reconciliation process?

The reconciliation process, if you will, confession, begins with an examen of conscience wherein you examine your life since your last confession and determine where you have committed sin. Then you go, usually into a confessional, and ask for the priest's blessing. Then you tell him how long it has been since your last confession, you tell him your state in life (I am a thirty year old married man with three children) and the proceed to confess your sins. At the end you say: For these and all other sins which I can not now remember I ask counsel, penance, and absolution. The priest will then offer you advice, he may ask some questions. Then he directs you to make a good Act of Contrition. You pray your act of contrition, and then he absolves you. He dismisses you, you thank him, go out and pray your penance.

What are the steps of Penance?

Catholic Answer1. Review your life since your last confession (Examen) 2. Present yourself to the priest3. Ask the priest for his blessing and tell him how long it has been since your last confession, mention your age, and your state in life (I am 23 year old single man)4. Confess your sins5. End with:For these and all other sins that I cannot now remember [as well as all the sins of my past life], I ask counsel, absolution, and penance.6. Listen to Father's instructions, and take note of your penance. If you don't understand anything, ask him to repeat it.7. Make your Act of Contrition when he asks you to:O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee, and I detest all my sins, because I dread the loss of heaven and the pains of hell, but most of all because they offend Thee, my God, who are all-good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve with the help of Thy grace, to confess my sins, to do penance, and to amend my life.If the priest says, "Go in peace, your sins are forgiven", you reply:Thanks be to God.

If you are Jewish can you receive reconciliation?

Roman Catholic AnswerNo, Reconciliation (or Penance) is on of the seven sacraments of the Catholic church. The only one that can be received by someone who is not baptised is Baptism. All other Sacraments are means of grace that can only be received by a member of the Church. However, you can always talk to a priest, if you have a problem, and they will be able to give you a blessing after your talk. I *believe* (you can ask) that such a talk is covered by the same confidentiality that would be extended towards somebody in the confessional.
