What kinds of people were victims of the Black Death?

The Black Death did not play favourites - one third of the world's population died. People from all walks of life perished. The disease was carried by rats - so therefore the more isolated persons like farmers were spared, but those in the city where rats were in plague proportions died. Rats were an accepted part of life, and they went from house to house infecting people. They moved where the food was. There is no record of anyone being able to "recover" from the Plague - so if you got it, you died - no matter what your age.

The black death killed everyone it touched. Due to trading a lot of people had contact with it so they all died. Very few were lucky to make it. The Plague was one of the most deadly pandemics in the history of the world.

People who caught the Bubonic Plague got the symptoms. These included swollen lymph nodes, especially under the arms and in the groin, the typical large round dark spots with lighter colored centers, fever, headache, painful joints, nausea, vomiting, fatigue. After a period days, a victim was likely to die.

In the middle ages, people tried cures, but they did not work. When this became known, people shunned plague victims, leaving them to die untended, even without food and water. Physicians tended some of the wealthy, but it was really only to comfort them and see they had food and water. Many people were tended by monks and nuns.

The dead were buried in mass graves or burned. Those who got the plague and survived were permanently scarred because the disease killed patches of skin.

The Black Death was rather indiscriminate in its victims. Anyone could be a victim, and this was something medieval people found rather frightening. It seemed to strike high and low, rich and poor, old and young, good and bad, without any predictable pattern.

There were parts of Europe where it was worse than others. In Northern Italy, it was especially bad, killing three quarters of the people in some cities.

Some people got it and survived it, and others seemed to have a natural immunity to it and never contracted the disease at all.
