The people that live in the countries that are members of the European Union are ordinary people of all kinds. There are 28 countries in the European Union, so there are the people of those countries there and people from many other countries in the world also live in those countries.

They joined what was then called the EEC in 1973. It would be up to the British people to decide if they want to leave it. All EU countries would have some people in them that would not want to be in the EU, but it has been beneficial for most countries and so the majority of people and the governments in those countries want to stay as members. There are things even the supporters of EU membership may not like, but overall it is seen to have more advantages to be in the EU than not.

Our passport system is not the same as all of the EU and we have not yet adopted the Euro as a currency. EU legislation allows all EU citizens free travel throughout the EU. On a side note many in the UK want to leave the EU and consider it a pain in the neck!
