The first concentration camp, Dachau, was created in 1933 to house political dissidents (mainly communists, but generally enemies of the regime). Apart from someone deemed anti-nazi for political reasons there were a whole host of groups confined to the camps, with corresponding coloured triangles to identify them. A prisoner's reason for confinement reflected how 'well' they were treated in the camp, until the last months of 44-45, where the victim groups fate re-converged as the situation was desperate and all prisoners were basically living evidence to the nazi crimes. Kapos, prisoners with some authority in the camp were often selected by 'faction' or colour of triangle. This created a sub-groups of victims, fighting for position to increase their chances of survival. Commonly, the 'greens' who were Aryan criminal prisoners had to contend with the 'reds' communists for positions of camp power. The commandant of the camp would empower one group until the other had worked for their downfall and assumed positions of power.

The list:

Jews

Roma and Sinti (Gypsies) who were the other non-Jewish racial group targeted for complete extermination.

Jehova's witnesses were vocal Nazi opponents and whistle blowers in the early portion of the war. They were not allowed to speak with other prisoners, as they were deemed capable of leading coordinated resistance.

POW's

Common 'Aryan' Criminals

Homosexual men, though not systematically sorted out received some of the worst treatment (especially those who were Jewish), even at the hands of their fellow prisoners. They were not an especially large victim group, but they numbered in the thousands. In fact, numerous homosexuals were confined in civil prisons AFTER WWII ended because they committed the 'crime' of sodomy. Though this may have subsequently changed, Heinz Heger's awesome book 'Pink Triangle's introduction stated that no homosexual had received the customary reparations payment to victims of the camps.

Poles, especially the educated ones (who weren't outright murdered) as they could possible organize resistance. These included professors, doctors, priests, lawyers, teachers, journalists, etc.

Free Masons

Communists - Soviet and otherwise
