How many breeds are there of greyhounds?

There is only one breed called Greyhound. However, there are multiple breeds that are also known as a type of Greyhound -- for example, the Saluki is also known as the Persian Greyhound. Italian Greyhounds are another breed that looks similar to a Greyhound but smaller, though they are not considered sighthounds and are instead a toy breed.

What was the Italian Greyhound first bred for?

The Italian Greyhound is an ancient breed. A 6000 year old Egyptian tomb shows dogs similar to the Italian Greyhound. They are also depicted on decorative Mediterranean art of 2000 years ago. The dogs became popular with noblemen during the Renaissance. A small Greyhound type dog was found in an ancient lava flow in the city of Pompeii, which is the ruined and partially buried Roman town-city near the modern Naples in the Italian region of Campania. In the sixteenth century, like the Greyhound, this breed was brought to Europe by the Phoenicians civilization, and became popular with European nobility. James I of England, Catherine the Great of Russia, Anne of Denmark and Queen Victoria, all owned Italian Greyhounds. During the 1700's Frederick the Great of Prussia took one of these little dogs to war with him, and he buried the dog himself when it died at the Sands Souci Palace. It was Frederick's dyeing wish that he be buried next to his dog so on the 205th anniversary of his death, on 17 August 1991, Frederick's family transferred his remains to Sans Souci, and placed them beside his little Italian Greyhound. In the 19th century an African chieftain liked the dogs so much that he offered 200 cattle in exchange for a single Italian Greyhound. The Italian Greyhound was recognized by the AKC in 1886.

Can you have a reaction to a greyhound If you have asthma?

It is unlikely that you will have a reaction to a greyhound if you have asthma. Probably the only cause is that if you have a reaction to a greyhound is only because you have a reaction to that type of dog. But I can't really tell; I haven't heard of a case of asthma-based reactions to dogs. It all comes down to the person...

Who would win a short race between a greyhound and a thoroughbred?

What is a greyhound comb?

It appears that a "greyhound comb" is a type of dog grooming comb which is about 7-7.5in straight comb, and has teeth set at two distances. I would call one set of teeth 'fine' (close-set), and the teeth on the other half of the comb, I would call 'super fine' (very close-set).So, if you comb using one side, you could choose to either use the close-set or the very close-set teeth on the comb. The Above Statement is not correct. The Greyhound comb is not a 'type of comb' - Greyhound is in fact a trademark and many sizes and types of combs are made under the Greyhound umbrella. They are only made in the UK. There are many many inferior 'copies/fakes' on the market. One easy way to be sure that you are buying a real comb is to purchase it from a 'Greyhound Distributor' that carries other Greyhound Grooming Tools, such as Greyhound Brushes and Greyhound Stripping Knives. They will also have the Greyhound Logo on them now. Its a Greyhound head set into the G. Any website carrying them will also have the Greyhound Banner. You will also see that ALL Greyhound combs are now finished with a 'Colored Anti-static Coating' unique to Greyhound. When you get a real comb in your hand, trust me, you will know ! Hooray for Greyhound I don't know what I would do without mine!! Please don't stop making them Greyhound !

What is the average lifespan for a Greyhound dog?

Usually 9 to 11 years. They make excellent house pets and are GREAT with children of any age despite their size and speed. Actually, the average life expectancy of a racing greyhound according to greyhound friends for life (the racing adoption agency) is 12 -15 years. This is quite a larger number than the one above.
