greenhouse effect
Ozone at ground level is a pollutant. It is a greenhouse gas.

the greenhouse effect!
Infrared radiation
The greenhouse effect is more pronounced for the earth's surface. Heat rising from the surface is trapped by greenhouse gases. These warm gases heat the air around them as well, also, as the earth' surface again.
The sun heats the atmosphere. Solar radiation largely passes through the atmosphere and warms the surface of the earth. The earth then radiates heat up into the lower levels of the atmosphere where greenhouse gases warm. The warmed greenhouse gases then continue to radiate heat in all directions warming the atmosphere and again the earth's surface.

the answer is radiation
The earth has a greenhouse effect that keeps the planet warm. This is natural, supported by the carbon and water cycles, and has been going on for millions of years. Greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide and methane from human activities mean the earth is experiencing an enhanced, or accelerated greenhouse effect which is causing global warming.
Carbon dioxide acts as a greenhouse gas and retains heat radiation from the sun, which, combined with other greenhouse gases helps to maintain the earths surface temperature. Without the presence of CO2 in the atmosphere, most of the solar radiation would not be retained and thus the surface temperature would be very low and unable to sustain human life.
