A really big one. Such as the .458 Winchester Magnum. You want a rifle that will throw a bullet that weighs over 400 grains, at a speed over 2000 feet per second, and the bullet should be made to either expand minimally or not at all, so that it penetrates deep and shatters bone if it encounters any.
The smallest round that you should ever use is the .375; but even that will not do good if the elephant is too big. the biggest you should use is a .950 JDJ which will pretty much kill it where ever you shoot it, but the bullets are very expensive.
