The Archaic Indians were those people who lived during the Archaic period beginning about 8,000 to 2,500 years ago. This was when the Ice Age had ended.
- At first they traveled in small groups hunting for food. Their shelter would be lean-tos or shallow caves.
- Later they developed larger groups and would stay in an area until the food gave out. Their shelter would be crude structures of grasses, sod, branches and hides with storage pits.
- Eventually, those living in the Mississippi area had permanant villages. They built mounds and wooden "houses" that were atop and among the mounds.
- By 1000BC the modern "nations" had formed and they had the structures that became familiar to the European invaders.
