The Native American Indian had more than 20 different types of shelters. Some houses were permanent and others were meant to be moved with the tribe's search for food. The major types are listed here:

  • Longhouse (birch/alder) or plankhouse (cedar)
  • Pit - sod houses
  • Tepee/Tipi/Teepee - portable housing
  • Wickiup - dome made of branches and hide covering
  • Wigwam or tatch dome
  • Masonry structures - adobe - pueblos
  • Log homes usually wattle and daub.
  • Igloo (snow)
