Dreams occur in the REM (rapid eye movement) stage.

More precisely, the most vivid and frequently remembered dreams occur during REM sleep. Dreams that occur during non-REM sleep tend to be more calm and less disturbing.

If the questions means to ask about the stage of sleep in which dreams occur, most dreams occur during Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep. However, other types of dreams do take place in non-REM sleep as well as when falling asleep and while awakening. But dreams can only be remembered after one is awake.
