In the 1930's in the south times were difficult, few jobs and little money. Most of the people lived in small towns and communities. Much of the food they ate was from their gardens. Home canning was a way of keeping food for the winter. What meat most had was chicken, fish, cheaper cuts of pork and beef and wild game (deer, squirrel, rabbit, birds just to name a few). They also ate alot of beans, peas and greens with their cornbread. Biscuits and gravy were often had for breakfast and was often what children took to school for lunch. If the cook of the family had flour, salt, baking powder, water and drippings (grease) biscuits were made. Light bread (store bought bread) they didn't see much of. Many didn't have sugar so used honey or syrup to sweeten with. Often the greens eaten were collected growing wild in the woods as were many of the fruits. Actulay to your surprise they did NOT eat wild game ( deer, squirrel, rabbit, birds just to name a few). They honestly mostly ate blood sasage, pork, and cabbage.
