A 1977 Ford F-150 when transmission is completely empty can take up to 5 quarts of transmission fluid without overflowing.
It is in the bottom of the transmission. You will have to remove transmission pan and you will see it.

Type A was a primitive transmission fluid used it the 40s & 50s. By the 50s there was also Type F. Ford used Type F and GM vehicles used Type A. Neither fluid is used in any car built after 1977 that I know of.
For automatic trannies: TH200 = 4.5 qts TH350 = 10 qts.

generally speaking, reverse will take a lot more fluid pressure to shift into than forward gears. so first you check to make sure that your transmission fluid is at the proper level and also that it isn't contaminated or burnt up. If your transmission fluid is fine and at it's proper level. (you have to check it with the engine warmed up, and depending on your transmission, have it in neutral or park when you check the level) if that's okay, it could be a number of different problems and you will be best off having a knowledgeable mechanic diagnose it for you.
