Lake Taupo is one of my favourite places in NZ. It has formed inside a caldera. The caldera, was created by a super volcanic eruption about 26,500 years ago.
The Lake itself has a surface area of surface area of 616 square kilometres it is is the largest freshwater lake by surface area in Oceania. It is up to 190 metres deep so it must have been formed from a large eruption indeed.
The Lake is fed from the south side by Waitahanui River, the Tongariro River which run off the higher ground around the active volcanos Mts Ruapeheu and Tongariro.
The Lake has great fishing and it's possible to go skiing on the mountain, visit the surrounding hot pools and then catch a rainbow trout on the Lake many of our customers have done this and say it is a unique experience.
