He was accidently shot by one of his own men on May 2, 1863. He survived, but the injury was severe enough to require the amputation of his arm. Jackson eventually died of pneumonia eight days later.

Stonewall Jackson was the victim of friendly fire as the Battle of Chancellorsville was ending as a Confederate victory. A bullet shattered his left arm just below the shoulder. There were no treatments for shattered bones except for amputation. As he was recovering, pneumonia overcame him. At that time there was no cure for that disease. Jackson died on May 10, 1863.
