What is shears?
Shears are a type of scisors that can be used for triming hedges and other plants or other types are used for shearing wool from sheep. Shear - minor weaknesses in a material can cause failure because the particles move farther apart and are less attracted to each other. This can be caused by compression. Shear - Shear pins are used in outboard motors to prevent failure of the motor (when the propeller gets tangled in weeds, a shear pin breaks and the propeller becomes disengaged with the motor and gears. The clutch and automatic transmission in a vehicle take into account shear forces, which enable parts to slip past each other and produce a smooth ride.

Differences between triaxial test and shear box test?
Shear box tests are generally suitable for cohensionless soil except fine sand and silt whereas triaxial test is suitable for all types of soils. Pressure changes and volume changes can be measured directly in triaxial test which is not possible in shear box test. Pore water pressure can be measured in the case of triaxial test which is not possible in direct shear test. Triaxial machine is more adaptable. The stress distribution across the soil sample in the failure plane is more uniform in triaxial test. The complete state of stress is known at all intermediate stages up to failure during the triaxial test whereas only the stress at failure are known in the direct shear test. In triaxial test, there is complete control over the drainage conditions, where control of drainage conditions is very difficult in shear box test.

How do different forces act on Earth?
There are three main forces that drive deformation within the Earth. These forces create stress, and they act to change the shape and/or volume of a material. The following diagrams show the three main types of stress: compressional, tensional, and shear. Stress causes the build up of strain, which causes the deformation of rocks and the Earth's crust. Compressional stresses cause a rock to shorten. Tensional stresses cause a rock to elongate, or pull apart. Shearstresses causes rocks to slip past each other.
