In most places, there were villeins or serfs who were bound to the land. They were not slaves, but could not legally move away. They had a right to the land, and were given a place to live and to farm, but they had to pay rent or give food to the lord.

There were freemen, who were free, but worked on the land.

The peasants mostly farmed, but did other types of labor, as mining, milling, or forestry.
