It depends on what war you mean. Bombs, nuclear to be precise, were some of the most feared weapons. Tanks also were feared highly.

At the time, most people feared it would go nuclear. Most people in the US feared the communists (called the Red Scare) and greatly feared atomic war; WWII had only ended 5 years earlier and was still VERY FRESH in people's minds, they knew what total war was...nearly every human being that was over 5 years old remembered World War II...and World War III scared them! People thought that the "commies" (as they were then called) had to be stopped in Korea...but going nuclear, caused a lot of hesitation on how the war would be fought. The world was lucky with the Korean War, in that it turned out the way it did...no communist victory...a short war, three years...and no nukes! It could've been far worse!
