Italians eat quite a variety of pizza that there really is not a definitive answer for it. Also, the great variation between Northern and Southern Italy causes differences in the types of pizza they eat. In central Italy pizza rosso (red pizza, only sauce) and pizza bianco (basically bread) are the two basic types, while in other areas margherita (what Americans think of as plain) is the main type.
