There is well over 50 Tonnes of rubbish including gas bottles, poo and even a Helicopter!

But in 1998 a private team calling itself the Everest environmental expedition removed over 1.2 tonnes of waste from Everest. primarily around the base camp and some in camp II.

  • The Nepalese government now requires a $4,000 deposit from climbers that it refunds only if they bring down the same amount of gear that they took up.

Over the past few years a climbing team brings down a vast amount of rubbish from the slopes of the mountain and from base camp. The mountain and base camp is now a lot cleaner than say 10 years ago.

When climbers descend from the high camps they are usually very tired and do not have much energy. This is why litter is left on the mountain. Today, there are dedicated climbing teams who bring down the rubbish left by others, making Mount Everest a cleaner mountain.
