Puppies need to be vaccinated against parvovirus and distemper; in the United States these two diseases are often combined with adenovirus, parainfluenza virus and hepatitis into one 5-way combo vaccine. Puppies also need to be vaccinated against rabies.

Puppies should start their vaccines, when possible, around 6 weeks to start taking over the maternal antibodies. They should return in intervals of 3-4 weeks until at least 16 weeks. The following are some of the most common vaccines being done.

DHPP - highly contagious, systemic, viral disease

Bordetella - Infectious tracheobronchitis results from inflammation of the upper airways ... may progress to fatal bronchopneumonia in puppies or to chronic bronchitis in debilitated adult or aged dogs.

Leptospirosis - bacteria carried by wildlife; affects the liver & kidneys; can be passed to humans

Lyme - tickborne, bacterial disease of domestic animals

Rabies - required by law; usually at 12-16 weeks.

Remember to bring a stool sample to test for intestinal parasites (even though he's been dewormed), and make sure he's started on heartworm prevention as soon as possible.

they need a six in one (some vets call it a 7in one) and its 3 or 4 times every 3 weeks til done then just once a year. Sometimes you can get it at your local feed and seed (depending on what state you live in) and give it yourself. Then at 12 weeks they get a rabies shot, this one has to be given by a vet. Then once a year on that one also.

The best thing to do is to take your puppy into your Veterinarian's office and have a check up done and he or she will explain what all needed to be done for your pup's health. The pup should have had one vaccination by 8 weeks of age, 1st DHLP/Parvo. At 10 weeks, 2nd DHLP/Parvo, 13-14 weeks 3rd DHLP/Parvo. At 4-5 months of age Rabies vaccination is due plus I always give a final DHLP/Parvo vaccination then too, not all people do this but I would rather error on the safe side. The pup should be dewormed too at 8 weeks and again at 10 weeks. Bring in a stool sample to your Vet and have him check the feces for internal parasites. You should also start your Pup on a Heartworm monthly preventative at around age 12-14 weeks. It is a pill that is given once a month and year around to prevent heartworm which is carried by the mosquito. Heartworm can be deadly, so be sure to keep your pet on this for the rest of his or her life. Another thing needed is a monthly flea & tick preventative such as Frontline. It can be put on the skin, topically, once a month year around to prevent fleas and ticks. Fleas can carry tapeworms and ticks carry many diseases so you want your pet flea and tick free. Now find a good name puppy food and you are all set. Don't forget obedience classes for your pup and lots of socialization. Ask your Vet where there is an all breed dog club you can join as they will have the obedience classes. Get a 6 foot lead and a choke chain that is 2 inches longer than the measurement around his or her neck. Well that is more info then you asked for but you will have a healthy happy pup :-).

The dog would be due for a rabies vaccine and a distemper/parvo combination vaccine. Depending on the area, other vaccines may also be indicated.
