William T. Sherman was the Union general that captured Savannah Georgia in December of 1864. As Confederate forces had evacuated the city to avoid capture, the mayor of Savannah surrendered to Sherman.
They were mostly african american people.
Once Sherman's forces marched through Georgia and the Carolinas, destroying everything in its path, civilians were devastated.

General William Tecumseh Sherman led the notorious "March to the Sea" through Georgia during the American Civil War. Starting in Atlanta in November 1864, Sherman and his Union forces marched through the state, destroying infrastructure and civilian property as they went. The goal of the campaign was to cripple the Confederacy's ability to wage war and ultimately hasten the end of the Civil War.
The US Civil War Battle of Marietta took place in Georgia for a period of time lasting from June 6 to early July. It was a conflict of importance for Union General Sherman as he marched towards the Georgia city of Atlanta.
