The NP231 transfer case is not directly compatible with the NV3550 transmission. The NV3550 typically uses a different mounting pattern and input shaft compared to the NP231. However, it may be possible to adapt them with custom modifications or an adapter plate, but this would require careful planning and fabrication. Always consult with a professional or refer to specific conversion guides for your vehicle.

it depends on what vehicle it came out of.
If it came out of a 2WD vehicle, yes. If it came out a 4WD drive vehicle, you'll have problems. On the 2WD transmission, the driveshaft goes directly from the transmission to the rear axle. On the 4WD transmission, the output shaft from the transmission goes into a transfer case.
NV3550 manual transmission: 1.98L, 4.2 pints. 42RLE automatic transmission: 3.8L, 8 pints for a service fill, 8.3L, 17.6 pints if it has been overhauled. The NV3550 uses Mopar Manual Transmission Lubricant. You can also use Royal Purple Syncromax fluid, this is what I filled mine with and it shifts worlds better than what it used to. The 42RLE uses ATF+4 fluid, nothing else. If you use anything else, it will burn up.
literature as a vehicle for cultural transmission
It supports and holds the transmission in the vehicle from the underside of the transmission.
Some do and some don't. Crawl under the vehicle, follow the transmission lines to the radiator, and see if there is an secondary cooler anywhere. If it came with the factory towing package it does.
