Blood is collected from the donor by inserting a large needle into a vein in the arm. Usually, one of the larger veins near the inside of the elbow is used. A tourniquet is placed on the upper arm

because if you take blood from an artery, or arterial blood, it will spurt out and be very bad, because the heart is pumping. it will bleed for longer, and bleed much more. venous blood is collected because its under less pressure, causing less damage if you make a hole in a vein as opposed to an artery.
