The Battle of Midway, 4-7 June 1942, is considered the turning point of the Pacific War. The Japanese actually lost four carriers, the remnants of the Kido Butai task force which struck Pearl Harbour. The carriers were the Akagi, Kaga, Hiryu, and Soryu.

The battle, intended to be a trap for the U.S. carrier fleet, was a decisive victory for the U.S. navy and severely damaged Japan's ability to wage an offensive naval war.

How come the US carriers at pearl harbor were not destroyed?

The attack by Japanese dive-bombers, torpedo planes and fighter aircraft on Pearl Harbor clearly demonstrated the superiority of aircraft over surface ships. It follows that the American carriers, with their large number of attack planes, posed a significant threat to the Japanese fleet. Failing to destroy the American carriers (because they were not present at the US base) meant that the major US strike force was untouched in the attack. Had the carriers been sunk, the Japanese could easily have attacked the west coast of the USA.

Is it easy to sink aircraft carriers?

No because aircraft carriers are so huge and it can handle lots of punishments. Aircraft carriers are incredibly strong. If you fire one missile at it, it still could float and move even up to twelve missiles and the aircraft carrier will take damages and still can move. If you fire several missiles or more, the whole aircraft carrier will sink.

What ships survived Pearl Harbor during the attack?

Vice Admiral Chuichi Nagumo canceled a third wave of bombers, refused to seek out the aircraft carriers, and turned back home because he feared an American Counterstrike. Because of this, the U.S. battle fleet was knocked out of commission for nearly six months but it survived. So the answer is, The Aircraft Carriers.

What important ships were not at Pearl Harbor on December 7th 1941?

Japan was unable to sink any of the three US Aircraft Carriers, as they were out of the operation zone, at training (one was pursued by a submarine, but managed to sink the sub); Lexington, Enterprise, and Saratoga. If these were to be too vigorously pursued, the Japanese planes might have failed to continue damage on the harbour.

How many US aircraft carriers were sunk during pearl harbor?

They were at sea. Mainly they were ferrying aircraft to a different base, I don't know which one. They also conducted assorted training exercises while they were out. It was just plain lucky that those aircraft were scheduled to be shipped at that time. If the carriers had been at Pearl we would have been in a world of hurt. Michael Montagne The 3 Aircraft Carriers that where suppossed to be in Pearl Harbour where all at sea carrying new planes to the American Bases on Midway and the west Coast of U.S. I sincerly thing that if the 3 aircraft carriers scheduled to stay in Pearl Harbor they would have been sunk or damaged during the whole war, but that dont mean the United States would have lost the War, there where many other cariers in good condition, and dozens being pruduced silently in the ports. The Saratoga was in port at San Diego, California, the Enterprise was 200 miles west of Pearl Harbor returning from Midway where it had delivered aircraft, and the Lexington was 460 miles east of Midway on its way there to deliver aircraft.

How Japanese Aircraft Carriers did the US sink?

The U.S. won the battle of the Midway only because the code breakers could figure out the Japanese codes. During the battle, the U.S. sunk four aircraft carriers, the Akagi, the Kaga, the Soryu, and the Hiryu. The Japanese, however, only sunk the carrier, the U.S.S Yorktown, which was later repaired and sent back into action.

Why was the Battle of Midway such an important battle?

It was important because the US fleet destroyed or damaged the majority of the Japanese Imperial Navies carriers.

How did the battle of midway change the course of war in the pacific?

The Battle of Midway changed the course of the war in the Pacific because the United States started attacking the Imperial Japanese Navy offensively rather than defensively. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, the Americans understood the superiority of aircraft carriers. By the end of the Battle of Midway, the Americans mastered the art of the aircraft carrier. In total, 4 Japanese aircraft carriers were sunk during this battle, Soryuu, Hiryuu, Akagi, and Kaga. The aircraft carrier sailed through the Pacific Campaign with glorious victories. It was what made large battleships obsolete, and its superiority is why the Untied States operates 11 aircraft carriers today, with a 12th one being built, more carriers than the entire world combined.

How did a Japanese man die in the Battle of Midway?

Nearly all of the Japanese casualties suffered at Midway were from the aircraft carriers. US dive bombers had struck the Japanese carriers, just as deck crewmen were exchanging bombs for torpedo's from the aircraft; because the deck crewmen were ordered to hurry, the replaced bombs/torpedos were on deck (instead of properly stored away), along with the now RE-ARMED & RE-FUELLED attack aircraft. US bombs, from the American dive bombers struck at that very moment. Exploding Japanese aerial bombs, aerial torpedos, and freshly fuelled airplanes, turned the Japanese carrier decks into exploding infernals.

Why was Pearl Harbor chosen for attack?

The Japanese feared American would join The Allies in WWII (world war 2), so they wanted to attack us before we attacked them. At that time, the U.S.A only had a few Aircraft Carriers (it was between 3 and 5) and they were all located at pearl harbor. The Japanese generals believed that if they could destroy those aircraft carriers (which are ships that can carry hundreds of jets, planes, bombs, and fire power) they could cripple America enough so that they could not interfere with their plans. Luckily (or by some unknown act of heroism), those aircraft carriers were not in pearl harbor when it was attacked. They were out doing some practice drills. They were informed of that attack though, and were told to stay away from pearl harbor (well, they were told to travel away, because there was the possibility of the Japanese airfleet coming that direction). i also heard that 1 or 2 of the carriers were still in the harbor and were destroyed.

Why is there so few aircraft carriers?

The cost of upgrading older ships to bring them up to modern standard is estimated at about $200 million and one year in the shipyard. The cost and return was deemed inefficent in view of the current poitical climate.
