World War II, the Pacific Theater of Operations, off of the Solomon Islands in Japanese held waters.
At that time, President Kennedy was a US Naval Lieutenant, junior grade, commanding the PT 109, (motor torpedo boat).
Lt. Kennedy got his men to safety after a Japanese destroyer struck and cut the PT 109 in half. Lt. Kennedy was able to affect a rescue of his crew despite his own back injury. He was cited and decorated for this action after furlough for medical reasons arising from the back injury.
The incident is recounted in the movie PT 109, starring Cliff Robertson as John F. Kennedy, USN, Lt., jg, Commanding Officer of the PT 109.
Most of Titanic's crew died, but a few made it out.
Abraham Lincoln and John F. Kennedy were both noted for their wit. When Lincoln was asked how long a man's legs should be, he answered "Long enough to reach the ground." When Kennedy was asked by a young boy how he became a hero in World War II, Kennedy told him "It was easy. They sank my boat." (Kennedy helped rescue the crew of the PT boat he commanded, including towing one sailor by his life jacket, with the strap between Kennedy's teeth. The rescue helped ruin Kennedy's back.)

Nothing. On his 4th and last voyage his ship sank off an island about 50 miles off the coast of Hispaniola. The crew was saved but they were ship wrecked. One of the crew members decided to take a native canoe and go for help from the Spanish governor on Hispaniola. The crew member finally got there, but the governor wouldn't see him at first and finally when he did he didn't send help to Columbus. When Columbus and his crew were finally saved they had been on the island over 2 years.
