Grant became famous as the head of the Union's Army of the Potomac. He won many battles for the Union in the Civil War and accepted Robert E. Lee's surrender at the Appomattox Court House in Virginia. His fame carried him to victory in the 1868 race for the US Presidency.

Actually, Grant was made commander of all the union armies after March, 1864. General George Meade remained commander of the Army of the Potomac. Grant stayed with Meade's army, and did direct much of the action.
