Australia had long answered the call to support Britain, becoming involved in everything from the Maori Wars, Sudan, South Africa, World War 1 - South Australia even offering a contingent for the Zulu War, all of which did not threaten Australia until Japan's entry to WW2.
Australia fought in wars with Britain because Britain OWNED Australia until after World War 2. The wars after that in which they fought together with the Brits were when they were doing United Nations military functions. They have not fought in any war because OF their desire to support Britain but because they are allies together in the United Nations.
Australia has not had any internal wars, but has been involved in many wars in other parts of the world, including the Boer War, WWI and WWII, Korean War, Vietnam War, East Timor, Afghanistan and so on.
Initially it influenced Australia to focus on defence in its own region, however the focus has now shifted back to becoming involved in other peoples' wars in the Middle East.
