Philadelphia was the largest city during the Revolutionary War. In fact, Philadelphia was the largest English-speaking city outside of London.
In 1776, English was the predominant language spoken in the United States, as it was the language of the British colonies. Additionally, Native American languages were spoken by various indigenous tribes across the country. Some regions also had populations speaking Dutch, French, Spanish, and German due to early European colonization.
