When Britain was on the gold standard, it was equal to a half-sovereign, a small gold coin equal to half of a pound (or 10 shillings since there were 20 shillings in the pound). After the end of the gold standard, it was largely replaced with the 10 shilling note until decimalisation when it was replaced with the 50p coin.
