The group had several hits in their own country (Sweden) before they were internationally known. People Need Love and Ring Ring are two of their earliest hits. Outside Sweden their first really big hit was in 1974-75 with Waterloo.

While Agnetha and Frida had performed backup on some earlier Benny and Bjorn tracks, the song considered the first true ABBA single is "People Need Love". It was recorded on March 29, 1972. It first charted in Sweden on July 1, 1972. It was released in the US later that summer and charted just outside the top 100 in Billboard, Cashbox and Record World. (The single was billed as by Bjorn and Benny, Agnetha and Anni-Frid, since the name ABBA wasn't chosen until later that summer.)

The first Abba single to hit #1 on any chart was the band's second single, "He Is Your Brother", released in Scandanavia on November 1, 1972. It reached #1 only in Sweden.

Abba's first chart-topper outside Sweden was "Ring Ring" (1973), which hit #1 in Belgium. (It was the first of 15 Abba #1s in Belgium.)

Abba's first number one in an English-speaking country was "Waterloo" (1974), which peaked in the UK and Ireland, and at least eight other countries. The first Australian #1 was S.O.S. (1975). Their first #1 in the US was "Dancing Queen" in 1976.

Well Abba's composers were Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson, and they started writing together in 1966. But the song considered the first true ABBA single is "People Need Love".

I would have to know what country. They had many number ones in the UK and Australia but they weren't as lucky with the Americans.
