Slavery was the major issue in the 1860 election. The Republican Party platform promised not to interfere with slavery in the states, but opposed the further extension of slavery into the territories. Abraham Lincoln was supported by individuals who opposed slavery. Lincoln received his electoral votes from 18 of the 33 states. He did not receive electoral votes from any southern state. Abraham Lincoln was not on the ballot in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas. Lincoln received electoral votes from the following states: California 4, Connecticut 6, Illinois 11, Indiana 13, Iowa 4, Maine 8, Massachusetts 13, Michigan 6, Minnesota 4, New Hampshire 5, New Jersey 4 of the 7 electoral votes, New York 35, Ohio 23, Oregon 3, Pennsylvania 27, Rhode Island 4, Vermont 5, and Washington 5.
