Alexander worshipped the ancient Greek gods and was therefore a pagan. He also seems to have seen himself, or at least wanted to be seen by others, as the son of the great god, Zeus. In this respect, ancient sources indicate that he probably saw himself as a 'hero' (in the sense of a divine mortal), rather than as a true god.
