Andrew Jackson had a rough relationship with the Native Americans. He kicked them out of America and formed an ally with the Cherokee Chief, who soon betrayed Andrew Jackson and went of with the British. He fought them in the War of 1812 and thought they were of an inferior race. He burned their towns and crops and killed women and kids.

Jackson wanted to relocate them somewhere where they would not be in conflict with the white settlers such as on the other side of the Mississippi.

Another View:

The Native Americans were not causing trouble. President Jackson, Congress and the States (especially Georgia) wanted the Native Americans' ancestral land and sought to remove them to less desirable "Indian Territory" (present-day Oklahoma), which had little agricultural value. This was primarily accomplished by violence and by exploiting the Native Americans through the use of treaties that favored the US government and harmed the indigenous people.

The Cherokee Nation was betrayed by some unscrupulous tribal members pretending to represent the Cherokee government, who entered into an illegal treaty with Congress (the Treaty of New Echota). The official Cherokee government tried to resist removal by appealing to Congress and by filing suit in the Supreme Court, to no avail. Once the deal had been completed, the Van Buren administration forced the Cherokee to cross country on foot, during winter, with little food or appropriate clothing. This tragic episode later become known as the Trail of Tears.
