I am not sure what you mean by a gap-- perhaps you are asking about the time between when he graduated from Columbia University (1983) and when he went to Harvard Law School (1989). He has said the reason was he wanted to work for a while. But his work in Chicago as a community organizer and advocate for the poor convinced him a law degree would help him, so he applied and was accepted to Harvard. He graduated, with academic honors, in 1991.
